WASH Program
Billions of people around the world are continuing to suffer from poor access to water, sanitation and hygiene, according to a report by UNICEF and WHO. Some 4.2 billion people around the world do not have safely managed sanitation services and 3 billion lack basic handwashing facilities. Lack of sanitation contributes to an estimated 700,000 child deaths each year due to diarrhea.
WASH is an acronym that stands for water, sanitation, and hygiene. After a Quenched clean water well is installed and dedicated for a family or community, we take the recipients through a WASH training. During this training, participants will learn how to safely dispose of waste, properly wash hands with soap, and about the safe storage and treatment of water at the point of use. Additionally, they will be trained on personal hygiene in their home and key surrounding areas.
One of the most unique parts about the Quenched WASH program is that the pastor who helped find the water need and dedicated the well is the one who will lead the community through the training. All of us at Quenched believe that we need to not only meet a community's physical needs of clean water and hygiene, but their spiritual needs as well. During the well dedication and WASH training, the pastor is sharing who Jesus is, how much he loves everyone in that village, and how he died and rose again to save them.
We have found that meeting physical needs like water and hygiene opens the hearts and minds of the recipients to their spiritual needs that only Jesus can meet. The pastor now has a platform he would not have had without helping with their physical needs, and people are willing to listen to what he has to say. Through this process, we have seen hundreds of people give their lives to Jesus and have their eternal destination forever changed in the few short years we have been doing this work.
All of this sounds great, but what does this look like practically? To help you understand the physical and spiritual impact of our work, we have a free resource just for you. We have a completed project report that will show you an actual family or community who went through this process, and allow you to see the impact the well had on their lives. This is the same report we send to donors who sponsor a well.
